  Let me first say that Dr. Judith Wheeler is the best dentist I have ever had. The problem began early this year when I needed a crown and I was clear that I wanted to first know if it would be covered by my insurance company. I was told they checked and it would be covered. After the crown was completed, I paid my portion in full. Later I received a $300.00 bill. I spoke to one of the office staff in person and called two more times to inquire about the charge. I received no answer and was even told I could call my insurance company and ask them about it. (WOW! That is part of the office staff's job duties). I called and asked to talk to the office supervisor and I gave my available times. She wasn't available and she returned my call during my work hours. I was patient and waited for her to call for weeks. I didn't receive a call. The hygienist called me to reschedule my appointment and I said I was changing dentists and although I was upset because Dr. Wheeler was the best dentist I have had, the office staff also needs to do their job. She spoke to Dr. Wheeler who knew nothing about the situation and they said they would have the "Office administrator" call me. I didn't know it was the same woman who already called (when I wasn't available) and left a message. This time she told me how "Worried" they were about me. Really? Being worried about me was an odd comment given a financial dispute, but anyway when I explained that the woman who called me during my work hours and she said that would have been her and she said never called me. That was admitting a problem because I had asked to speak to the office supervisor so I told her I still had the message and I would listen and see who it was and call her back . I had a feeling it was her when she fell silent on the phone. So I called back a week or so later to let her listen to the voice mail message that I still had and she wasn't available again. Twice I called over a period of probably 2 months (at least) and she's never available and she didn't call me when I was off work. So she left me her cell phone number. So, I finally make a third call and I said if she can't talk to me then I wanted to talk to the hygienist or Dr. Wheeler and she got on the phone. I played the voice mail message for her and I reminded her that she said she never called me and then she said she never said that. YES YOU DID! She asked why I didn't call the cell phone number that she left on this voice mail message and I said I work the same hours they do and I'm not calling at 6:00 PM to get an answering machine. Then she said she told me she works in three offices and is only in this office every 2-3 weeks which was partly true. She NEVER told me she worked in other offices, NEVER! Then she said I should have called her on my cell phone and I asked what makes the difference if I call the office phone or your cell phone to which she fell silent again. Ultimately, what I learned is the difference between "Estimate of Benefits" vs. "Predetermination" which the office staff didn't tell me about. Not knowing the lingo, they should have been getting a "Predetermination" and the office administrator told me she needed to "Check" the hygienist because that's who checked the notes and discovered what had been done. Her tone of voice was not a happy one, either. Then she said she talked to Dr. Wheeler and they would reimburse me the $300.00 and she informed me she would close my file. I still wanted to talk to Dr. Wheeler so she would hear about the problems, but unfortunately that call didn't come. So, what I learned is even if the office staff is wrong, don't expect a solution unless you keep on it and in the end, I'm not happy about losing Dr. Wheeler as my dentist. I would certainly return if the office staff were different. I have been a loyal patient for many years, consistently keeping my appointments and always paying IN FULL at the time of my service. Everyone else is great!
